Bringing out the best.
 |
Asparagus ~ Ever popular, asparagus range in
colour from green to purple to white. These tender stalks shine
on their own when steamed, microwaved or stir-fried. |
Buy asparagus spears that are firm, with deep green or
purplish closeed tips. To store, stand spears upright in a container
filled with about 1” of water. Cover loosely with a plastic bag and
refrigerate.
 |
Green Beans ~ These crunchy green pods are
delicious in side dishes. You can cook green beans in advance
without losing their fresh quality. Steam them until crisp
tender; plunge in ice water to stop the cooking process. |
Green beans should be bright green and feel velvety.
Although best used right away, you can store them in a plastic bag for
up to 5 days.

Green Onions ~ Also call spring onions or
scallions, these light green offshoots of the bulb onion have a
sweet, delicate flavour. For a yummy brunch idea, stir them
into some cooked hash brown potatoes and combine some crumbled
bacon and shredded cheddar cheese. |
Choose green onions that are free of soggy leaves. When
storing, remove rubber bands and place in plastic bags
in the crisper.
 |
Peppers ~ Crunchy peppers becomes sweeter as they
ripen. Chop them into a colourful pasta salad with broccoli
florets, halved cherry tomatoes and cooked bowtie pasta. Toss
with Italian dressing and grated Parmesan cheese. |
Pick peppers that have green stems and feel heavier than
their size. Peppers do best when stored unwashed in the crisper in a
loose plastic bag.
 |
Radishes ~ With a taste ranging from slightly
peppery to fiery hot, purple red radishes make a tasty garnish.
